Series
Overview
Administrative
responsibility for the series is headed by Star Race Cars which
also constructs the Star Formula Mazda race car and oversees a comprehensive
track-side support organization for competing teams and drivers.
The success of the Star Mazda Championship is evidenced
by the fact that fields of 30 to 40 cars have been commonplace at
many races.
The annual schedules for the Star Mazda Championship
have included high profile events where Formula Mazda cars appear
as the “opening act” to some of America’s top
drawing racing series. In its supporting role, the Star Mazda Series
has been paired with a variety of major types of racing, including
such headliners as the Formula One, American LeMans Series, IndyCar,
ChampCar, USAC and NASCAR.
For 2005, the
Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear is sanctioned by the
International Motor Sports Association and currently appears with
the prestigious American LeMans Series at nine road course venues
coast-to-coast. The 2005 schedule also features events supporting
the Indy Racing League, Formula One and USAC. This series has its
own points and prize schedule and a one hour show is prepared during
each race to be cablecast nationally on the Speed Channel Network.
2004 brought the new Pro Formula Mazda car which
has quickly become the premier development formula car in North
America with over 70 sold in its debut season. The ten race championship,
captured by Michael McDowell, saw fields averaging 35 cars per race.
In 2005 the growth continues with an announced twelve
race schedule, new teams, and the best young drivers competing in
North America.
